LOOKING FOR LOVE....READ THIS........

I received the following letter ;     Sit down....read it..........and then reflect on it.

Country singer Johnny Lee's 1980 hit not only reached number one on the Billboard charts, but its unforgettable refrain dominated pop culture references for some years.

Lookin' for love in all the wrong places...

It is what musicians call "a great hook," or something that you can't forget after you've heard it. If you know the song, I apologize. It will be stuck in your head now for the next day or so.

But it's one of those rare popular hooks that also happens to capture an important truth, in this case one that lies near the root of today's "culture wars." Are we seeking for true love, or are we just seeking the fleeting feeling that popular culture tells us love is?

The differences between the two should be clear to us, especially in their consequences. One way involves surrender, sacrifice, selflessness and the recognition of one's own and the beloved's ultimate destination -- heaven. The other is it's polar opposite -- involving using another, self-satisfaction and only caring about the moment.

With the latter, when one is indeed looking for love in the wrong places, we find a radical individualism and shallowness. It is this view that is behind the confusion that allows the Culture of Death to thrive. A person holding this view may say he or she is opposed to murder, but can turn right around and murder an unborn child because this tiny human being threatens what they think will be their individual happiness. A mistaken search for love can have deadly consequences.

Consider those who promote abortion, euthanasia, sterilization and contraception. What lies at the root of this population control mentality other than a radical individualism, and a willingness to deny another person's right to life to achieve what appears to be the happiness of the moment?

This radical secular view is dominant in many areas of society, having convinced many that their happiness lies in sexual "freedom," and in personal glory and wealth. When "developed" nations look at the suffering of developing nations they thus misdiagnose the problem and, therefore, the solution. To them, the solution is to get rid of the extra people, those who are holding back "sustainable development." So they saturate these cultures with media, advertising and "education" that is intended to make them into radical individualists like so many are in wealthy nations -- to change their view of love and happiness into being about self-fulfillment. Most important to these death peddlers is how to convince people to have as much sex as possible without producing children.

Of course it's not just in developing nations where this is being sold. The contraceptive mentality, so diagnosed by Pope Paul VI and John Paul II, and railed against by HLI founder Father Paul Marx and many others, has had many consequences other than the intended sexual "freedom" and "women's empowerment." We see the nations who long ago bought into this warped view become far less free, and certainly not empowered. Parts of Europe and Asia are in demographic free fall and can't convince people to start having children again. The most populous nations -- those whose fertility was the highest until recently -- are becoming the economic powers, even buying the debt of "developed" nations who can't be bothered to have children. Even here in the supposedly most developed nation on Earth, our fertility rate is dropping, and any connection between this and our faltering economy is ignored.

Among the seven new saints canonized by Pope Benedict on Sunday was Saint Kateri Tekakwitha. At a time when we need to be reminded of what true love is -- that is, a true and complete gift of self -- we receive this great gift of saints we can look up to in our own age. Saint Kateri once said "I am not my own; I have given myself to Jesus. He must be my only love."

This love is radical. It is selfless and most certainly focused not on the next moment of fleeting happiness, but is focused rather on the eternal, and bringing the eternal into today, here and now. It is a love that is all about gift -- about the other, and finding a deeper and more true happiness in giving oneself to another.

The false narrative that happiness is found in power, pleasure and individual fulfillment is sold to us constantly, even as the consequences that clearly follow this lie are ignored. But we have a choice, a way to use our freedom to truly love others in a total gift of self (cf Gaudium et Spes24). Thanks to Saint Kateri and others even among us who know where to look for true love, we can avoid looking for love in all the wrong places, and firmly set our gaze upon Him Who is the Way, the Truth and the Life.
  Sincerely yours in Christ,

I can hear the music in my head........

AMERICA.........ONE NATION......

My Daughter Melissa is a friend of Kate Quigley whose Brother was one of the Americans killed during the attack at the Libya Embassy......He is Glen A.Doherty a former Navy Seal from Winchester,Ma.who died defending Ambassador Chris Stevens as his Security Guard.
He is an American Hero who stands for all that is great about this Country........and I have been privileged to be given Kate's email to her family and friends.THERE ARE TIMES WHEN WE CAN ALL STAND TOGETHER AND PUT PARTISAN POLITICS ASIDE.
I wii let Kate speak for herself and Glen;

Dear Friends and Family,

I wanted to take a minute to share with you all the events that took place yesterday because it was truly a memorable day and I wish so many of you could have experienced it with us..

We began the day early at a breakfast meeting with the State Departments top officials as well as the families of Chris Stevens, Ty Woods and Sean Smith.  There was raw grief in the room but it was really nice to know that we were not alone in this and the families of the other fallen hero's were amazing.  In speaking with Chris's family they are concerned with the fact that they don't know his wishes for the future, no conversations were had.  I am thankful that myself and others did this with Glen and we know exactly what he wants.  I spent time with Ty's family and he was professionally much like Glen.  A professional who set the bar above the top and settled for nothing less, also one of the best in the field.  His close friend, and former seal who was close to Ty and Glen  told me he didn't let too many people in, but Glen was one of them.  He said Glen could imitate Ty's mannerisms perfectly as no one else could.  I am glad to know that Glen had one of his boys with him, as we all know with Glen that was of utmost importance.

At Andrews Air Force base we spent a few hours prior to the ceremony again with the families and top officials.  It was here that we met with Obama, Biden, Clinton, General Powell and his wife, Congressmen and Senators, etc.  They all spent time talking, crying, hugging us (I couldn't get Biden off me.....enough Joe!) He was quite a character and had a lot of fun with Jack and Thomas.  He gave them the gold coin of the Vice President which is an extremely elite club to be in and an invitation to the White House....they were thrilled.  Thomas was dying to ask President Obama for his coin but was shy to do it.  He chose instead to drop Biden's coin at the Presidents feet as Obama was chatting with my brother Greg as a way to let him know he had it.  Obama....not to be outdone by the VP not only ponied up his own coins for the boys but boxes of candy with the Presidential seal and more stories and traditions about how these coins are to be used.  We were never rushed and I was amazed at how the highest members of Government knew much about my brother and the others.  Congressman Markey presented us with a flag that he flew over the Capitol building at half mast....we were the only family to have this honor.  Hillary Clinton spoke to us candidly and beautifully about the realities of the middle east.  My boys were truly impressive to all in the room and I was so very proud of them.  Barbara handled herself with strength and grace.  Greg, Alice, True and Naomi were strong and beautiful.

The actual Ceremony in the hanger made me so proud to be an American, it was beautifully done.  The fact that both Clinton and Obama brought Glen home is something I know he is smiling about (politics aside!)  My story telling, name dropping brother can't tell this one so I will do it for him....but I know he would have loved it.  In the beginning of the ceremony Chris Stevens mother broke down.  Barbara was about to put a hand on her shoulder, instead Obama go up from his seat and came over for one more hug before he himself went up to the podium.  The words and traditions of bringing these boys home were beyond beautiful and I felt a sense of peace inside of me.  There was a moment of lightness as Ty Woods father's cell phone alarm went off and he could not silence it.  Our State Department friend, former Secret Service took it upon himself to relieve the nice man of his phone and shoved it under his leg to silence it..  After all the words and prayers were spoken there were more hugs from all and greetings from Senator Kerry, and John McCain.  The Libyan ambassadors also came to us with hugs and traditional middle eastern greetings and a very surprising/unexpected message.  He looked at me and said "we will get those responsible for this, I promise you that....sooner or later."  It was nice to hear and a promise I hope is kept.

The mood after the ceremony was much lighter as I think we all had a sense of peace from our experience.  There was some laughter and jokes, and my nephew True was given helicopter twirls from our State Department friend, former Secret Service/Marine/dear friend of Glen's.  It was a beautiful sight.  If Glen were telling this story he would add that he were surrounded by Secret Service to make it feel even cooler.  We said our goodbye's one last time and watched the plane with our boys depart, headed for one more stop before hometowns.

I am so proud to be an American on this day, and I have witnessed the best in the business helping to make a really shitty time a little bit better.  Politics aside the day was handled with the utmost professionalism, tradition and beauty.  Glen is proud.  Glen is honored.  Glen is home.

Feel free to forward to any and all, thanks for all the kind words and support,

Kate

DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION.....

It is hard for me to listen to all the rhetoric being sent out from Charlotte these days.I have a  memory and I remember things politicians have done, and when I hear them say things that are completely different than their prior actions.....It is hard to stay quiet.

I will leave it this way on this night.......It is their turn.....and it is the American Way.....

I will take the advise of the British who have been a friend and foe.

STAY CALM, AND CARRY ON......

JERSEY SHORES......CAMP SUNSHINE....

I asked for a hero last week.......and I did not get a response......so I found some "right under my nose"

I try not to "kick someone" when the are down, but it was noticed that Jersey Shores has been cancelled.
It  has been a "thorn in my side"that the characters of the show have been popular beyond belief the last few years and been rewarded for their unruly behavior and beliefs;while other young people go around trying to do the right things ... and never getting rewarded or "fully realized for their actions"

I am changing that right now  !!!

Have you heard of CAMP SUNSHINE IN MAINE   ?

Here is a paraphrase of it's website;

"On the shore of Sebago Lake,Camp Sunshine provides  respite ,support, joy and hope to children with life threatening illnesses and their immediate family......."

Meaghan Walker of Lynn, Molly Durgin of Lynn, Brooke Bergeron,Swampscott, Gabe Skelton of Lynn, Lily Gardner of Lynn, Jake Kiley of Lynn and Megan Lang of Peabody along with Teacher
Doug Lowe of St. Mary HS,Lynn,Ma. are the heroes.

All of the above young people took time away from their families, responsibilities and summer jobs to
give love and support to children and families in need during a difficult time in their lives.

God Bless  these superstars.....and take a look at Camp Sunshine and consider volunteering or giving them financial support.

HAVE YOU GOT A HERO.........?

Followers of "Thought's" are aware that I am a fan of "action rather than words".....if you have a story of  somebody or thing that rings of heroism, love, call of duty above the norm .....let me know and
we will see to it that it is recognized.

My motivation for this blog is to tell positive "life stories and dreams of people "........It is great to give  recognition due to human and spiritual achievement ......harveyrowe@me.com is open 24 hours
awaiting your story.......

Have a Great Day    !

FATHER RALPH W. BEITING....REST IN HEAVEN

www.fbamc-ky-org

One of the greatest figures that I HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED  passed away while I was on my trip to Ecuador.I strongly urge that you link to the above site.

His brave heart gave away a few weeks ago while a group of missionaries from Boston had come to assist him in helping the poor in the Mountains of Kentucky. He was in the Hospital and he requested that the Group visit him. In his true fashion he gave them a list of all things he wanted accomplished during the week......along with an overview of the Mission in the future. He passed in his sleep that evening.

He went to the Mountains of Kentucky shortly after graduating from the Seminary for a one year assignment. The year ended and instead of leaving he requested to stay awhile longer. He did not want to leave the "poor of the mountain"..........60 years or so later......His life on earth came to an end in a mountain hospital.

What did he do ?.....He built thrift stores which hired employees, the stores needed maintenance crews,
who in turn needed stores......all of which churned out an economy that needed homes, trailers, schools
and warehouses. The good people of the USA sent donations of clothes,appliances,food....you name it.....it showed up.......It was a hard week of work to unload those trucks as they came....You never knew what was in them.

He built an economy.......out of faith, love and hope.

Saint Mother Theresa visited him....since she had learned of his deeds....Yes, the same Mother Theresa
of whose Nuns had created the Hospice in Ecuador that I visited last month.

Interesting note.....Only 2% of the population that he served is Catholic.

Please pray for him and ...."His people of the Mountain"    http://www.cdlex.org/index.cfm/NewsItem?ID=339937&From=Home

KIM......PULLS A SURPRISE.....

Ok......when is enough........enough.....Kim mentioned the other night at  "My Brother's Table"that
he might swim on Saturday......

So what did he do ? He swam the Graves Light Swim  to Carson Beach, South Boston which I
believe is 8 miles..........This must be some kind of world record.........If not it should be......Swim the
English Channel and six days later finish another long distance swim....

The director of the Race said he has no memory of anyone doing it in the past.

Kim mentioned that he weighed 200 lbs. prior to the English swim and was at 184 lbs.  the other night.
Maybe  he has developed a new weight loss program....It is hard to eat much... when in the water.

A LOVE STORY......AT SEA

How do you know a relationship is based on love ???......Love as defined by JOHN in the BIBLE is
not selfish, angry demanding or judgmental among other things. It is in summary putting that other person above your own wants and needs. How is that in a few words ?

The reason I bring it up is because of Kim Garbarino and Amy Simione- Garbarino. It is my understanding that they became engaged on the White Cliffs of Dover,England last year and got married in 2012.

In the failed Channel swim last year Amy was "deathly " sick during the entire time. This year she knew it was going to happen again and in spite of it all she "sucked it up "and lasted 22 hours in the boat while still doing her assigned duties during the swim.........I always say in this blog that actions are louder than words.

Additionally, Beth Simione, Sister of Amy took time off from her busy life to support Kim & Amy.
She knew what fate Amy had coming to her,but Beth knew it might not turn out all that good for her.
It didn't.......but she worked on.....and even gave a smile once in awhile.Another story of Sister Love.

If you can make it.....It will be appreciated

HOME......WITH FANFARE......CRAIG LEWIN

Kim was interviewed by the Lynn Item yesterday followed by WBZ RADIO and in the next day
or so by the Lynn & Revere Journal........Who knows what is next........

I have received many comments and a few people have asked specifics about Craig Lewin. You have asked the right guy.He is the Son of two dear friends, Brenda & Richard Lewin of Swampscott,Ma.
He was a swim star at both Swampscott High School and the Boston College Eagles in the competitive
ACC.He has received a Master's Degree from Northeastern and has an exciting full time position in an
area of research that is confidential in nature. He is not James Bond.....I can tell you for certain.

He has another endeavor which is ENDURANCE SWIMMING   www.enduranceswimming.com
which has developed HEADSTRONG POSTURE TRAINER which helps develop the maximum potential of a swimmer in that it corrects the head and body position leading to a more efficient stroke.
www.headstrongposturetrainer.com.

I was talking with Kim yesterday in relation to Craig and we came up with the following consensus;
It may be possible to find strong swimmers similar to him, but very difficult to get one that combines his realistic coaching techniques and mental toughness at the same time.

I mentioned the other day that Craig was in and out of the water seven times during the Channel swim
since the rules allowed him to be in one hour and then out for one hour. Each time he came out of the cold water he would get the "chills" and get seasick. This happened each time, but he answered the "bell"each hour.It reminded Kim of his old boxing days .......

If you want to Swim and win or just be a lifeguard for your kids.....look him up and he will assist you.
It is a way to meet a "celebrity of the future."

Further, the Posture Trainer can help you "Golf Duffers"keep your head in the right position during
your swing.

IT HAS BEEN DONE...KIM CONQUERS CHANNEL

It is hard to believe that I had the opportunity to be part of this team that helped Kim Garbarino
to this "shining moment".......People have been trying to accomplish this feat since 1903 and only a 1000 or so ever have actually done it.

It is a daunting attempt.......Kim started at 5:57 am on Sunday Morning and completed it at 11:17
that night. The time was 15 hour and 37 minutes. We left the Bread & Breakfast at 4:45 am on Sunday
and did not return there until 2:30 am on Monday. We had to pack our clothes, sleep one hour and rush off to the Heathrow Airport. We arrived at Logan and  we were picked up by Limo to drive us home
As we came into Winthrop we were  greeted by the sign in this picture.

The swim was very difficult due to cold air and water  rough seas and currents. An example of the
the problems is the following, if Kim was thrown a bottle to drink.......and he stopped his swimming stroke the currents would drop him back 500 feet every thirty seconds. The Channel swim is approximately 22 miles long. The official report is not complete yet but it is probable b that Kim
had to swim 34 miles to finish the 22.

Kim & Amy wish to thank everyone for their interest and support, Amy's Sister, Beth Simone
was the one that noticed the sign in Winthrop and had the Driver,Sully spin around and surprise Kim the next time around. It is all good.

There was a lot of sea sickness yesterday in the 20 hours, but no one complained but just went about their business.I am "so proud"and I cannot say enough about Craig Lewin. He trained with Kim,and
it was his job to swim along with him for an hour every other hour. His problem was not so much the hours in the water, but the coming out which would make him cold and seasick in the boat.He was in
and out of the boat seven times. It was very difficult to stay on course, but it was accomplished.Craig
was a master at it.

The Team Stayed Calm and Carried On.....We prayed for this ending and our Prayers were Answered.
How to Go.

5 AM......ANOTHER GO AT IT...

I have told you before.......The weather and tides in both England and France are the variables
That can ruin the day for any great swimmer such as Kim.He is ready along with the team, and we
Are hopeful ,determined and have the will to do this..

We went for a swim in the Channel along with a run and a hike on the White Cliffs of Dover..

Kim and Craig took a nice swim.It is unbelievable to see all the swimmers, probably 50 or more
With the water temperature at 61 degrees and the air at 75 degrees.

The English call this a scorcher ....Sorry for the glitches in the blog.I cannot contain certain tech issues that keep occurring

we have great photos.....and it is promised that there will be follow ups upon on our return. They will not download to the iPad.I have done it many times but it will not cooperate.

STAY CALM,CARRY ON

ANOTHER DELAY

We were on the boat ready and packed....The weather was clear and chilly. then the word came that
There was a storm front on the French side...It was put off to tomorrow morning. The problem on that side is that storm fronts increase the riptides and the boat going slow along with the swimmer go off course and cannot get to the finish........

The weather is fine here and we are going for a swim

Friday, August 10, 2012

TEN HOURS AND COUNTING.....

We were up early and in London by 10:30 am ( 3:30 EST). We toured the City in the double busses
And saw the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace......The Queen, and her relatives were no
Where to be found.........
The highlight was that we did get to see an Olympic Event.....The Open water  10 K Swim which I
Assume you guys in CONUS can see this evening......We had the opportunity to purchase memorabilia and hang out in Hyde Park which is 500 Acres and is the size of Monaco ....

The weather controls .......but at the moment it appears that we will be in and on the water at 5 am.
We also were informed that Craig can be in the water every other hour with Kim rather than after each two hours. He decided that he could use some more  nourishment so we went and purchased a few more Red Bulls and power bars.

we all want this to start...Amy and Beth are making more sandwiches........and there has been discussion about "sea sickness".Craig says he would rather be in the water rather than the boat when
Discussing sickness

I will report any results as soon as I can,but we will be out of communication for most of the day.

STAY CALM,CARRY ON..........Kim is quiet but determined, trained and ready

Thursday, August 9, 2012

KIM TEAM TO LONDON IN MORNING...

We went to the Channel this afternoon and Kim,Craig and myself went into the Channel for
A light workout.I wore a wetsuit and the water felt comfortable.....Of course Kim and Craig
Wore just bathing suits and it was fine for them also......I called them "show offs".........
Kim is ready, and we have decided that we all are going to London early in the morning.

We had a great meal with many laughs tonight. we are ready for this adventure.
As I write this some of the words seem crossed out. Please ignore the glitch

STAY CALM, CARRY ON

A HICUPP.....SWIM POSTPONED TO SATURDAY AT FIVE AM

Team Kim is all set.....and then the word from the Boat Captain that we are put off one more day
Until Saturday at 5 am Greenwich Time.It is disappointing but Kim will have his time.

The upside is that Craig and myself are going to Olympic Park and Buckingham Palace early in the
Morning.....and that may bring some gifts for the people close to us

STAY CALM,CARRY ON !!!

Standby for more info tomorrow from Olympic Central, London...

KIM IS READY........

Good Morning Chaps.....I was told to sleep in today....We awoke at 9 am (3am) your time
The swim for Kim is at 3am here....you do the math.....It is cloudy at 65 degrees....The water
Is about 61.......We are going to drive a practice run to the beach.....since the evening dark with
Narrow roads and no street lights might be a little issue.....Kim is rested after watching Olympic
Boxing last night.

Later report during day.....Have to get ready for drive

It is now 3:30...15:30 at our Country retreat....We had a wonderful time shopping and walking
Around Cantebury in the County of Kent....yes the City of Chaucer fame.It is about 60 miles from
London....If you come to the UK it is worth the trip....especially for some one of the background
Such as my Daughter,Shannon who has the Education and teaching of the English language. It
Is a shame that I did not brush up on the Cantebury Tales before leaving on this adventure. It is
Modern day shopping with history surrounding it.

The thyme for the rest of the day and night is the following;

" STAY CALM,AND CARRY ON "......Kim is resting and I am sure he is reflecting on the next 24-30 hours.....Will report again.....soon

ENGLISH CHANNEL AND ECUADOR.....OLYMPICS AND SURVIVAL

My trip to the English Channel is approximately 36 hours away and the anticipation of this event is high . I hope to challenge you with stories of challenge, hope and endurance in the quest of Kim
Garbarino to swim this "monster body of water "that is a heavily travelled shipping lane with
Tankers and other Commercial floating machines that hopefully will be aware of the swimmers.

However, my "heart thoughts" at the moment are on the people of Ecuador that I met a few weeks ago.
They have few of the modern conveniences that are part of our daily living, but on the other hand seem driven by a spiritual living that spreads happiness and a joy for living that seems less stressful and complicated than ours.......Upon my return I hope to give you further thoughts on this Country and it's
People.....

FRIDAY FORUM...DON'T BOX YOURSELF IN..

IF YOU EAT FROM A BOX

YOU WILL LOOK LIKE A BOX

Next time you are standing in line to check out at the grocery store take a look at the shoppers around you.  Most will look like the foods that they are purchasing.  In most cases the bigger and wider the shopper the more boxes of "food" in their cart.

The  "food"  in these boxes are processed and filled with more preservatives and additives than real food.  So the cycle goes like this. . . you pour yourself a serving of sugary cereal.  You eat that serving and then proceed to stick your hand in the box and eat three or four more handfuls.  You did this because you didn't satisfy your hunger. . . after consuming huge portions of chemicals you are still hungry.

All that has happened is that you consumed way too many calories and you are still HUNGRY. . . TIRED . . . AND WORKING YOUR WAY TO BEING OVERWEIGHT

YOU EAT MORE THAN NECESSARY AND THEN YOU NEED TO BUY MORE. . WHO IS SATISFIED ? ? ?  . . . THE FOOD INDUSTRY!!!

The simple rule to BOXFREE EATING . . .

DO NOT EAT FROM A BOX UNLESS THE BOX CONTAINS ONLY ONE INGREDIENT

A good example of this would be oatmeal.  The oatmeal in the round box contains only oatmeal.  Frozen vegetables come in boxes too and you will notice that the only ingredient listed on the box will be peas for example.
THAT'S OK. . ..

If you can live by this simple rule you will painlessly consume fewer calories and shed pounds with very little effort. Eating food in its natural state will waste your waist away.

FITNESS FRIDAY FORUM FOOD FOR THOUGHT

THIN PEOPLE EAT WHATEVER THEY WANT

They just don't want as much . . . Did you ever notice that skinny people can stop eating as soon as they feel full.  They can eat a half of a piece of cake and leave the rest .  They can even eat just a few potato chips . . . or one cookie!

EAT LIKE A THIN PERSON AND SOON YOU WILL BE ONE.

YOU CAN EAT BIRTHDAY CAKE

But it’s not your Birthday every day.  It's not your family or friends birthday everyday either.  When there is a birthday to celebrate you can eat the cake.  BUT NOT EVERYDAY.  We are writing about a healthy lifestyle and eating is a very big part of living.

If you eat healthy the majority of the time you will feel better, weigh less and look great in your new party dress.

LET THEM EAT CAKE
Here is a simple, guilt free cake recipe.  Mix a white cake mix with one can of diet soda or soda water.  No eggs, no milk, no oil just diet soda or soda water and bake as directed on the box.  Try diet orange soda or diet cream soda or flavored soda water.  Experiment with different mixes and soda flavors.  But not too often!  You won't believe how light this cake comes out !!! It's amazing.

FRIDAY...FITNESS FORUM :DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME..

WASTE YOUR WAIST AWAY
We have been writing the Friday Forum for about six weeks.  If you have been reading it faithfully and following our advice . . .  You have developed the habit of working out every day.  You are noticing that your energy level is higher and you can accomplish more in your day.  We bet you are sleeping better too

Now. . . it's time to think about what is going in your body.  We all know what we should and shouldn't eat it's just a question of. . .  DO YOU WANT TO EAT HEALTHY OR NOT.  The trick to all of this is to remember that you won't do it 100%.  We advocate a change in eating style not a diet.  Nothing can be accomplished successfully all at one time.  Even your everyday  tasks are comprised of many small steps. Think of all of the steps from getting in your car and out on to the road each morning.  Key in the ignition, car in reverse, hit the gas, back out of your driveway, hit the break, car in drive, give it some gas and go.  Seven steps for a simple task!!!  So to change your eating style it's one step at a time.
MAKE SOME CHANGES . . .  GO SLOWLY. . . ONE WEEK AT A TIME
This week's tip  CHEW YOUR FOOD SLOWLY. . . PUT YOUR FORK DOWN BETWEEN BITES.  Without any other action you will reduce your caloric intake. . .  translating into some inches off your waist.

In fact, slow down....altogether, and smell the flowers, spend more time with your loved ones
along with reflecting on the important things......

In this same vain.....Money helps, but it doesn't solve the problems.Harvey's Guru,Lou Panakio
has always said this about money.....It is paper with "dead man" pictures......

Enjoy every minute of this weekend....and remember your workout.....

CATHOLIC CHURCH...WAKE UP...FOR KIDS SAKE....

I think followers of this site know I am on the side of the Catholic Church on most of the issues such as Abortion......however my view and some of my friends....are saying the following;

If you are going to have "tons" of kids around how about some baby changing areas.....?

I have been in many of the churches and I am sure I probably missed seeing a "station "
Here or there.....but I have never actually seen one in a Catholic Church.

I will be paying attention.....Somebody should tell The Pope....

.....PHYSICAL......SPIRITUAL..........GUILT FREE= HAPPY

DON'T WORRY . . . BE HAPPY
Working out is not only the key to having a better quality of life.... but it is also one of the many secrets to being happy.  In the book Be Happy! - It's Your Choice by Alice Inoue she writes that one of the ways to be happy is to take care of your body..........  And in part states the following. .  .  . "The body that you have is the vehicle that takes you through this life ". . . . Honoring your physical body is important on your path to feeling happy..........."The lack of energy leads to lost hopes and goals which in turn lead to depression.......We have been giving UPPY AWARDS on UPower at Facebook........have you noticed the "common denominator".........They all live the healthy lifestyle.......but they are extra- ordinary individuals in other endeavors......They seem to accomplish more than the
average person......eventhough ..........we all have the same amount of hours in every day

We understand that the spiritual aspect of us plays a great part in our mind and will.....but you cannot abuse the vehicle that carries that "beautiful soul "to its purpose on Earth.....Physical Energy.....is the "little motor that can"......One needs the other.....

Think about it.....What are your wishes.....and where do you want to be a few years from now.........

LET'S CHANGE THE THOUGHT TO FOOD;

I was traveling last week and I had a full kitchen with a few things I had bought a few days before......I was hungry.....and I LOADED THE FOLLOWING ITEMS INTO A POT;

can of Hunt's Fire Roasted diced Tomatoes, Trader Joe's Mirepoix(celery, onions, carrots) along with vegetable broth and seasonings(whatever you have sitting around).....heat it to your preference.....and you are all set.....and happy.......NOT REALLY FANCY, BUT GOOD FOR YOU AND GUILT FREE........
Don't deny your body what it NEEDS. . . DRINK LOTS OF WATER. . .  EAT REAL FOOD . . . AND MOST OF ALL KEEP MOVING. . .
Next Friday let's talk eating not dieting!!!

VACATION BRAIN THOUGHTS.......BY BRENDA.......

YOUR BEACH CHAIR DOESN'T WEAR A WATCH

So on Saturday, March 3rd Harvey let us all know that he had two intensive workouts WITHOUT ME . . . A thought on that. . . Harvey U have the POWER to run for miles but I bet you were really bored without me.

And what were Richie and I doing while Harvey was pounding the pavement?  Well we were down in Miami. . . and maybe we didn't run as far as Harvey but that's because we decided to swim to CUBA, to see the relatives. . . just kidding.

On a more serious note a leisurely vacation in the sun is a perfect time to get in extra workout time.  You will still be able to sit by the pool or at the beach, read a book and sip on piña coladas AFTER you have used the fitness center at your hotel or gone out for a jog, a swim or a walk on the beach.  You can even give these workouts a little more time than you would at home.

YOU ARE ON VACATION WITH NOTHING TO DO. . . TAKE MORE TIME TO MOVE.

The pool has no idea if you are late. . . your book doesn't care when you finish it and your piña colada  isn't sitting around waiting for you. . .

FRIDAY FORUM.....BRENDA THOUGHTS.....TUNE IN.....

I am telling you......tune into Friday Forum tomorrow....You will get some good vacation ideas
and of course.......  Thought's by a woman......which up to this point has been uncommon on this site.

I think that is a good thing.....

LEAD......OR .......GET OUT OF THE WAY

I ran a total of 16 miles the last two days.....not to just tell  you about it. I am beyond the point of
impressing you or myself. The roads yesterday were a little slippery and today the wind and rain
got my attention......although the temperature was not bad.......

It was the perfect weather to run in concern to yesterday's Friday Forum.....".Whether ......Weather "....
It looked and felt treacherous looking out the window.....but once outside with the first quarter mile
finished.....It was an inspiring workout.I ran into one other runner and it was the well known triathlon
Iron Man finisher and FITWERX owner Marty Miserandino. I realized I was in the right place with that kind of company.

I had co-authored yesterday's blog and I felt the obligation to "do what you say".....If you are asking
where Author Brenda Lewin was ??......how about  Flor..ida with Hubby Richard. No weather report from them.

LEADING IS A GREAT GRACE TO BE GIVEN.....BUT IT DOES COME WITH RESPONSIBILITY.........

FRIDAY FITNESS FORUM - WHETHER OR WEATHER...WHAT DO YOU DO...

                                         WHETHER…OR…WEATHER

“Bad weather always look worse through a window”  Author Unknown

Oh, the weather outside is frightful  !!!  Grab your coat…and get your hat ! !

You probably are thinking at this point that we only meet for our runs in good weather. . .  Nothing could be further from the truth.

Finding ways to work out when the snow is falling, the wind is howling  or the temperatures are soaring is a challenge. Our only rule for postponement is lightening…….because one of us  is sure that she will be struck.

If the temperature is  HOT.. . HOT. . .HOT. . . we run a little slower and stop for water.  We sometimes even stop and walk.  IT'S ALL OK, BECAUSE WE'VE CONTINUED TO MOVE.  That may be our day to only give 70%.  No worries . . . 100% days will be just around the corner.

Some of our best runs have happened on icy cold mornings with wind chills below zero. We  get out of our vehicles and lament about the weather, but not whether  to do it, then our conversation starts, the steps take over, our bodies warm up and the icy cold no longer exists……We win……the cold loses.

UNCOMFORT BRINGS COMFORT

So you can't use the weather as an excuse . . .  And don't worry about being uncomfortable.  The first few movements of any activity are usually uncomfortable.  It will always take your body a few minutes to acclimate, so just realize that you are going to be uncomfortable at the beginning of every work out.  The first plunge in the pool sends a chill through your body . . . the first downward dog makes your arms ache . . .the first pedaling cycle on the bike makes your quadriceps hurt.  As long as you continue it all comes together and your body will comfortably move in the way that you have chosen.    ADDED BENEFIT. . . moving comfortably through your day!

"Obviously you can't change your genes, but you can give them a damn good run for their money."   Author Unknown

I met a woman in my YOGA class, who has a terminal illness and was given six months to live two years ago.  She has been practicing YOGA for over nine years and she believes that her practice has helped to keep her alive and has given her a better quality of life. When she isn't hooked to the oxygen tank she looks like the picture of health.  Her body moves fluidly through the poses and she is able to handle her daily activities with ease.

Taking care of your  body is not a luxury .It is essential to your well being.
SNOW BANKS AND BAD WEATHER DON'T TALK MUCH.........BUT THEY HELP TEACH YOU .......WHAT YOUR MADE OF.......IN YOUR BODY,MIND AND HEART........

FRIDAY FORUM.......WHO IS THE MASTER......OR SERVANT....

ENJOY THE JOURNEY…AND BE A BRIGHT TORCH....not a small candle.........

IS YOUR BODY THE MASTER OR SERVANT ? ? ?

Your body is a much better servant than master.......think about that for a moment.

It is up to your inner self to control who is in charge.
Relax and enjoy your workout time.
As they say in YOGA class "Live in the present."
Don’t think about the things that you have to do later in the day.
Those things will come soon enough and will still be there whether you thought about them or not.  And new things will be there tomorrow.

Believe it or not . . . All of those responsibilities that lay ahead of you would not be taken care of anyway during your workout time.  Think back to what you used to do during that time.  REMEMBER . . .YOU WERE STILL SLEEPING
You now get up an hour earlier you gave yourself the gift of time.

AND most important once you have finished your walk, bike, swim, run or whatever you have chosen, you will have more energy to plow through your day.

LISTEN  to your breath and the expanding of your lungs……..
Be thankful that you are capable of these movements………
How effortless climbing stairs will become

FEEL the strength in your arms as you lift weights or do pushups…..
Making it easier to carry the laundry basket filled with your sweaty workout clothes and wet towels

CONSISTENCY IS THE KEY. . . Every day that you get up and workout brings you that much closer to making this lifestyle a habit that you can't live without

WHAT IS THE POWER OF A WORKOUT?

Each workout distances you from the person you no longer want to be.

A RELATIVE IS IN ROME THIS WEEK,AND SHE WILL BE IN THE SISTINE
CHAPEL LOOKING UPower at the work of MICHAELANGELO.....who
said the following;
"the greater danger for the most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it,but that it is too low and we reach it"..........

JOAN OF ARC......A THOUGHT AT THE END OF DAY...

I ran into this quote by......... Joan of Arc before her death;

" I know this now.Every man gives his life for what he believes.Every woman gives her life for what she believes.Sometimes people believe in little or nothing, and yet they give their lives to that little or nothing.
One life is all we have......and then it is gone........

But to surrender what you are and to live without belief is more terrible than dying....even more terrible than dying young...."

SO.......

Tomorrow is another day....What are you willing to live for.....and support not forever....but just the next morning......

That's a start......

ANOTHER GREAT WEEK AHEAD....HISTORY,UPPYS AND MORE..

We have a holiday today for those that keep count, and for others that do not know what day it is.....Monday President's day....Washington and Lincoln who never sold a car in their lifetime.....Two
great books in the past year concerning them.....Bill O'REILLY AND GLENN BECK.....They are
historical and for you liberals forget the Authors are not of your persuasion.....that has nothing to do with the historical discussions, unless you are still arguing about the Civil War and the Revolution......

Wednesday will bring another UPPY Award to a consistent, dedicated  person to a  Healthy Lifestyle....
You might note that these award winners for the most part are dedicated to other matters in their life which
reflect the energy and stamina which carries them into other areas.....a coincidence ?.....I do not believe in them.

Watch UPower on Facebook......Brenda Lewin....POSTED A QUOTE YESTERDAY....which may make you stop and think about priorities

AND THE END OF THE WEEK BRINGS, THE HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL ...FRIDAY FORUM...GET READY FOR SOME MORE COMMON SENSE.....AND INSPIRATION....

WHAT A BIRTHDAY WEEKEND..........A EURO WAY TO GO....

I appreciate all that that made my weekend a "Birthday Bash".....Facebook gave a great assist since it gave people a minute out of their busy and  own weekend to say some really nice things...........My Family had a  "shindig" last night with the the "Grandchildren" who really like me....at the moment.

The surprise highlight was from Maria Rowen who never fails ......She is thoughtful and not afraid to
spend the "greenbacks". She told me a month ago that she had something lined up and that we would talk later.....After listening to Lisa and Maria I was convinced that I was going to a "paint ball" location or on some "trapeze" contraption. The date was changed to Friday for reasons unknown to me.I picked Maria up
Friday and we were off to Route 1A....and it appeared that she was not really sure of the location.....which had me further confounded.....

She told me to stop in the "Not your Average Joe " Mall, and drive to the back stores.I knew their was a Yoga and Karate location THERE,and in fact a class in karate was in session and they had white uniforms on.Maria told me to park and she gave me a gift that was white cloth......Karate right !.......
wrong again.....The destination was next door.......EUROSTOVE CULLINARY.......What a night....
We were enrolled in a cooking class with seven couples and with the assistance of Chef Jake and his assistants we collectively made.......

Recipes Include:
  • Basic Risotto with Variations
  • Crostini with Brie and Apricot Sauce
  • Ginger Steamed Salmon with Caramelized Onion & Toasted Macadamia Nuts
  • Minestroni with Sun Dried Tomato Pesto
  • Steamed Asparagus with Champagne Sauce & Red Raspberries
  • Zucchini Saute with parmesan Cheese
  • Sauteed Duck Breast with Pinot Noir Sauce
  • Warm Wild Mushroom Salad with Black Truffle Vinaigrette
  • Short Ribs Braised in Porter Ale with Maple-Rosemary Glaze
  • Winter-Spiced Molten Chocolate Cakes

I learned how to chop correctly, use a pressure cooker, make mirepoix, and use a mandoline to make spaghetti zucchini......The cooking was from 7:00 pm to 8:30pm and then we sat down with all our new friends and had a delightful meal.Of course wine was plentiful for those who wished to partake.......
It was a time to never forget.I say let's get some friends together and do it again....Thanks again Maria
for everything.....including my "very own white chef  apron"........It really would not help in
Karate.

BIRDS OF A FEATHER....AND DISCIPLINE WILL FLOCK TO YOU..

BIRDS OF A FEATHER FLOCK TOGETHER
So you've been reading our Friday blog for the last two weeks.   You are giving this life style some degree of thought and hopefully effort.  But you are finding distractions are bombarding you at every turn.
THAT'S LIFE!!!   You need to find a way to make it easier so that you can stick to a daily routine.

You may have figured out what you enjoy as a workout. . . If only you can stick with this plan.

It's easy you just need to PARTNER UP
Find a partner, group, class, club or gym that you can make a commitment to.

It could be a spouse . . .It could be a friend . . .It could be a gym rat . . .It could be a co-worker . .
It could be a muscle head . . .It could be a sibling . . . It could be somebody you haven't met yet . . .
Finding the people to surround yourself with may sound hard at first but if you continue to take part in your activity you will find others who are doing the same.  There are groups for everything ... book clubs, weekly card games...cookie swaps.

THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO GET TOGETHER FOR PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES AS WELL.  WE KNOW OF LOCAL GROUPS THAT MEET TO SWIM IN THE OCEAN EACH WEEK, MALL WALKING GROUPS, BIKE CLUBS, RUNNING CLUBS AND EVEN MEET EACH MORNING TO LIFT WEIGHTS IN A GARAGE.

If you let it be known that you are taking part in an activity, those with the same interests will gravitate to you and you to them.  Not only will you have people around you to help you reach your goals, you will make new friends that could change your life in ways you couldn't imagine.  (A TOPIC FOR ANOTHER DAY KEEP  READING)
NEVER FORGET THE WORKOUT PARTNER THAT HAS TO BE WITH YOU AT EVERY WORK OUT SESSION - DISCIPLINE

Who is Discipline...........?

Author Matthew Kelly says" discipline is the faithful friend who will introduce you to your true self. discipline is the worthy protector who will defend you from your lesser self.discipline is the extra ordinary mentor who will challenge you to become the best version of yourself."....

Discipline is on our shoulder every day........GET WITH THE PROGRAM..

FRIDAY FORUM.......A TIME TO PLAY...AND A TIME TO WORK

TIME FOR WORK . . .
So last week we talked about the effort that you put in to your workout and your food choices.  This week we need to talk about finding the time and type of work out that works for you.
One of our biggest obstacles is TIME.  It's no secret that the easiest time to get a workout in is very early in your day.
Working out at the beginning of YOUR day is a true example of the domino effect.  You will feel fantastic. . . You will want to eat healthier throughout the day. . . You will have already accomplished one feat before your day begins, making the rest of the day a breeze.  And best of all. . . You will go to sleep earlier so that you can wake up earlier and you will sleep very well.

HOW WILL YOU DO THIS. . . JUST DO IT
So set the alarm one hour earlier than you do now.  The truth is that no matter what time you wake up, your first step out of bed feels the same. AWFUL!
But, once your feet hit the floor you are halfway done.  You are up and ready to go.

WHAT WILL YOU DO . . . The body is a wonderful creation, capable of many motions.
YOU CAN WALK . . .yards, miles, trails, mountains, sidewalks, indoor malls
YOU CAN RUN . . .for your life, miles, marathons, tracks
YOU CAN BIKE . . .roads, sidewalks, trails, spin class
YOU CAN DANCE . . .aerobic. mumbo, zumba
YOU CAN STRETCH . . .yoga, pilates
YOU CAN SKI . . . mountains, oceans, lakes and rivers
YOU CAN SWIM . . .pools, oceans, or the English Channel
Get the idea, the list is endless.  You decide what works for you. You can even combine activities,  just get moving.

TIP
It takes time to make a new behavior part of your routine so start tonight.
Set your alarm for one hour earlier and by next week when we meet again you will have conquered the hardest obstacle.  Piece of cake!!! Just kidding piece of apple.  LET US KNOW HOW IT'S WORKING FOR YOU
                                                                        HR/BL
